X Abstract

Digital libraries need a solid software foundation that manages their digital assets. Based on such a software digital libraries can build the information services for their customers. This paper describes ADIGRES, a digital repository software, that is able to manage huge amounts of digital objects in a secure and fast way. The need for ADIGRES came from the implementation of the Austrian Literature Online Digital Library. This library is online since 2002 and today contains over 10,000 digital objects. As these objects are mainly books the system stores about a million digital pages. Although the system performs quite well up until today, due to some design limitations it will not be able to manage more than 100,000 digital objects. These limitations were well known in 2002. Therefore a new project started with the goal of a complete redesign and reimplementation of the software. The Austrian Literature Online Digital Library community joined forces with several Austrian universities, the Humboldt University Berlin and Sun Microsystems in the Sun Center of Excellence for Trusted Digital Repositories. Supported by the experiences of the project partners, a new digital repository software, called ADIGRES, was designed and implemented. In this paper we show the design of ADIGRES which is based on the “Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS)”. ADIGRES is capable of managing millions of huge digital objects and to perform fast search operations in the meta data of the objects as well as in the objects themselves. It has a sophisticated user management which allows different digital libraries to share a single digital repository. It provides flexible interfaces for the integration of the repository into existing digital library systems. ADIGRES is already used in research projects and will be released as open source software in the near future.
