AbstractThis paper introduces two main ideas for query optimization: (1) a method of random sampling to estimate a probability distribution on the selectivity of a query and (2) allowing the database user to supply a con¯dence threshold which determines the emphasis the optimizer will place on expected cost vs. predictability of cost.
