AbstractThe relationship between psychological factors and physical health in people with severe/ profound mental retardation (S/P MR) has received increasing clinical attention. This paper describes a newly established Behavioral Medicine Section at a large state ICF/MR facility where the majority of individuals had S/P MR. The composition of the Behavioral Medicine Section is described. A related Clinical Incidence Survey identified individuals who would benefit from a behavioral medicine approach to a particular problem. We highlight the Dental Desensitization Program as an illustration of the application of clinical behavioral techniques to health problems in persons with mental retardation (MR). Those who support individuals with MR must increase their advocacy for behavioral medicine interventions.
